Adobe Illustrator Tips - Part 3

In this article I will be sharing another 5 adobe illustrator tips. This is part 3 of the Adobe illustrator tips series. If you are interested you can check out part1 and part2.

Tip 1: Star tool shortcuts

When you press option while using the star tool it lets you create a star with a wider centre.

Pressing Command while using the star tool helps you control the height of the spikes.

When you press Up / down while using the star tool it lets you increase or decrease the number of spikes respectively.

Pressing shift while using the star tool will help draw an upright star that cannot be rotated in any direction.

Tip 2:  Global select and edit

If you want to replace multiple instances of an object in your design with a new object, instead of doing it manually you can adopt the following method as it is more convenient and time saving.

Step 1: Copy the new object.

Step 2: Lock artboards that you don't want to affect.

Let us consider the following example, wherein we want to replace the circles with a hexagon.

Step 3: Select any one circle to be replaced -> go to properties panel and click start global edit -> this will select all other circles that are the same as the one you want to replace irrespective of the size and colour -> now paste the new object (hexagon) and make adjustments if required to match the size and position to one (the others will be adapted)

Select the old object (circle) and delete it -> press stop global edit in the properties panel.

Tip 3: Sample only colour and not entire appearance using eye dropper.

Usually when you use the eyedropper tool it takes all the properties, for example the fill and the stroke colour and width.

However, if you want to sample only the colour (either the fill or the stroke colour) and not the entire appearance then press shift along with the eyedropper.

Tip 4: Change default font and character styles in adobe illustrator

Usually the default font in an illustrator file is set to myriad pro, however you can change that default along with the desired style properties as follows,

Window -> Type -> Character styles -> double click [Normal Character Style] -> click basic character formats -> modify font family and other properties as per your choice -> ok.

Tip 5: Split lines of text

Suppose you have a paragraph and you want to break each line into separate lines, you can do so as follows,

Object -> flatten transparency -> ensure convert all text to outline is unchecked as otherwise you won’t be able to edit the text using the character panel -> ok.

Ungroup the paragraph, to access the individual lines.

With this we come to the end of part 3 of adobe illustrator tips. I hope the article was of value to you. Thank you and have a great day.
